Transcript For: Applying for an English Teaching Assistantship

July 09, 2007

Regional Program Managers answer student questions on the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship program at the May 16, 2007 Information Session.

Valerie:             Hi, this is Valerie Hymas

Tony:                And Tony Claudino

Valerie:             And we’re here, and we want to announce the questions and answer session for the most recent U.S. student guidance session

Tony:                And so, if you couldn’t make it to any of the six locations that were having these info sessions, here’s a chance to listen to some of the Q & A we have for these sessions.

Applicant:         I’m fluent in Italian but I’m an elder statesman. Would like to go to do an English assistantship in Italy, and I’m wondering do I have to have a field of expertise other than Italian Renaissance, history, the history of Florence, etc.

Jody:                In other words, you’re applying for the Italian ETA or English Language teaching assistantship program? Is that what you’re saying?

Applicant:         Correct.

Jody:                With English language teaching assistantships, your primary purpose is to teach English or to be involved in English language activities at your placement. That’s going to be about a 20 to 25 hour commitment per week. You certainly may pursue your own area of expertise… your own area of research, but your primary purpose is to teach English. You mention that you’re an elder statesman; I don’t know what that means.

Applicant:         I’m 65.

Jody:                Yeah. You can apply for the ETA program. You’re not a teacher are you, by profession?

Applicant:         I am a substitute teacher, but I was professionally in corporate sales.

Jody:                OK , that’s fine. That’s OK.

Walter:             For those of you who are applying for one of the English teaching assistantships, I’m going to say this again. Go to the how to apply section and look up the instructions for crafting essays and if you’re applying for one of these English teaching assistantships, look at the section that talks about what you should cover in a project statement for an English teaching assistantship. That’s going to give you a very good idea about what they’re looking for, and what they want to hear from you in relationship to what you see yourself doing in that activity.

Valerie:             And that’s it for the questions some candidates have asked us during one of our guidance sessions. Please remember that if you have a question, feel free to email us, or contact us. Our information is all online.

Tony:                And, look for the next podcast. Thanks.
