Program Managers answer questions on applying as an at-large candidate. June 6, 2007 Information Session.
Valerie: Hi, this is Valerie Hymas Tony: And Tony Claudino Valerie: And we’re here, and we want to announce the questions and answer session for the most recent U.S. student guidance session Tony: And so, if you couldn’t make it to any of the six locations that were having these info sessions, here’s a chance to listen to some of the Q & A we have for these sessions. Q: I’m applying to Mexico, and I was wondering what the possibilities are of getting help with an application, talking to somebody about ideas for an at-large student. A: You can call me. I’ll talk to you. My phone number’s on the website. Q: Thank you. Q: I’m applying to Brazil, and my question is: I’m applying as an at-large applicant. I graduated with a bachelors degree about 15 years ago. And I’m wondering how much weight is given to the academic requirements, the transcripts, the grades, the certificates, and things of that sort, versus life experience. Because I don’t have anything in the field that I graduated in that would really support the area that I’m applying in Fulbright… A: I understand. Yours is rather unique situation .You will be required to submit your transcripts, but you need to take care to make sure in your statements that you talk about this experience that you bring to the project and make sure you have referees that can speak to your experience, to your experience relative to the project would do it. Again in your case because of the distance between the time you were in school and now the idea of having faculty who taught you provide the reference probably is irrelevant. But you should try to look for credible references in the field, or perhaps even academic people who know what you’re doing, and know who you are and speak to that you’ve had experience. So in other words, it’s up to you to present the strongest case that you’ve got the ability to carry out this project, that you’re highly qualified to carry out this project, and you have several ways to do it. OK? Valerie: And that’s it for the questions some candidates have asked us during one of our guidance sessions. Please remember that if you have a question, feel free to email us, or contact us. Our information is all online. Tony: And, look for the next podcast. Thanks.
