Information for Current Grantees - Special Programs for Fulbright Grantees - Pre-Academic Programs

Fulbright PreacademicTraining Program

For more than fifty years the U.S. Department ofState’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has provided fundingfor preacademic training, an integral component of the Fulbright ForeignStudent Program.

Preacademictraining includes programs of intensive English, English languagerefinement,field-of-study training and orientation to the U.S. Preacademicprograms also provide grantees with a period of adjustment prior tobeginningtheir academic programs as well as a better understanding of thebenefits and responsibilitiesof their Fulbright grant.

Participating Fulbright grantees attend one of thefollowing types of programs:

  • IntensiveEnglish – four- week to eight-monthprograms of full-time English training through regularly scheduled classes.
  • IIE-designedEnglish Refinement for Graduate Studies– two- to three-week programs designed by IIE for grantees with a high level ofEnglish proficiency but who could further improve their language and academic skills.
  • Field-of-StudyProfessional Skills Development –four- to six-week programs that provide a combination of English languageinstruction and academic orientation in the areas of law, business and publichealth.
  • FulbrightGateway Orientations –three-day programs designed by IIE for grantees proficientin English. These programs provideinformation on academic skills and integrity, graduate-student life, cross-culturalawareness and American culture.

Please note the following:

  • All participants must be Fulbright grantees
  • All Fulbright grantees are eligible to attend a preacademic training program, but not all will be assigned
  • Preacademic training programs take place immediately before Fulbright grantees begin their academic program
  • Before leaving home, Fulbright grantees participating in preacademic training program should carefully read Information for Current Grantees
