Fulbright Preacademic Training ProgramFor more than fifty years the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has provided funding for preacademic training, an integral component of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program. Preacademic training includes programs of intensive English, English language refinement, field-of-study training and orientation to the U.S. Preacademic programs also provide grantees with a period of adjustment prior to beginning their academic programs as well as a better understanding of the benefits and responsibilities of their Fulbright grant. Participating Fulbright grantees attend one of the following types of programs: - Intensive English – four-week to eight-month programs of full-time English training through regularly scheduled classes.
- IIE-designed English Refinement for Graduate studies– two to three-week programs designed by IIE for grantees with a high level of English proficiency but who could further improve their language and academic skills.
- Field-of-Study Professional Skills Development four- to six-week programs that provide a combination of English language instruction and academic orientation in the areas of law, business and public health.
- Fulbright Gateway Orientations –three-day programs designed by IIE for grantees proficientin English. These programs provide information on academic skills and integrity, graduate student life, cross-cultural awareness and American culture.
