FULBRIGHT ENRICHMENT SEMINARSThe U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) sponsors enrichment seminars, conferences and workshops across the United States as part of its flagship Fulbright Program. These enrichment activities, an integral part of the Fulbright experience, benefit Fulbright foreign students and support the overall mission of the Fulbright Program – to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The Institute for International Education (IIE) administers the enrichment seminar program under the guidance of and in consultation with ECA. A variety of enrichment activities that benefit different Fulbright student populations take place throughout the academic year. Each year, from February through April, nine traditional enrichment seminars take place across the United States. The seminars are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education for the benefit of first year foreign Fulbright students. The seminars are a mix of lectures, panel discussions, site visits, interactive workshops, community engagement opportunities and meetings with American citizens. These seminars focus on science, technology, innovation and social needs. Each program explores how advances in scientific fields impact sustainable solutions to problems in the realms of public health, energy and the environment. The From Lab to Market seminars are for the benefit of foreign Fulbright students from developing countries and aim to expand participants’ professional choices in the private sector and the public sphere. The Global Food Security Seminar brings together foreign Fulbright students from developing countries whose academic interests include agricultural studies, environmental science, food science, agronomy, agricultural economy and associated fields. The seminar aims to promote a multidisciplinary dialogue among food security experts about technologies and strategies to feed rapidly growing populations in an environmentally sustainable and healthy manner. Throughout the year, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs hosts several special, regionally focused seminars for foreign Fulbright students. Regional Seminars benefit Fulbrighters from specific world regions and address issues that impact participants upon their return to home countries. These seminars have ranged from Social Entrepreneurship Seminars for Fulbright students from Afghanistan to Re-Entry and Leadership Seminars for Fulbrighters from Sub-Saharan Africa, Western Hemisphere and Southeast Asia. Regional Seminars are co-hosted by institutional partners across the U.S. including U.S. universities, non-profit and community organizations. Every fall, a special conference is convened for the three cohorts of Fulbright students who have been awarded the International Science and Technology Ph.D. Award. This conference meets in a different U.S. city each year and it focuses on innovative scientific research. The conference promotes professional development of the Science and Tech Ph.D. fellows and aims to strengthen their future research projects.
